One of the biggest problems of the next half a century is to plan for is the ever ageing population.
If this problem continues to persist the population of Europe will dramatically decrease and cause major challenges here in Europe and across the entire world
Why is there an ageing population?
It is caused when the death rate is higher than the birth rate and that leads to a natural decrease in population.
Over the last 25 years the fertility rate has risen slightly from the 2024 average of 1.34 to the 2050 average of 1.48. It has risen due to the large amounts of incentives introduced, yet it is still not enough.
According to the most recent Continental Census the population of the EU is approximately 398.8 million. This represents a 39.8 million decrease over the last 25 years.
To combat this issue the European Union has introduced a variety of policies:
The Universal Childcare Directive established much of the following as well as mandating provision of childcare to all
Free and subsidised afterschool and school holiday child care options introduced in the form of summer camps, afterschool clubs, sports clubs, etc.
'Baby Bundles' introduced, giving parents early - age chilcare necessities, free of charge
New regulations surrounding maternity and paternity leave, these include a minimum 20 weeks of basic paid leave that both parents must take, an optional minimum 10 weeks unpaid leave, and encouragement of part-time work after parental leave to ease into work - life again.
